Inspired by the community formed by Tuesdays "Ask the Horticulturist", Weston: Project Grow is an interactive vegetable growing class, in which participants will come together with Weston's Trevor Smith for a guided community gardening experience. Everyone involved will receive a personal growing kit and a vegetable starter of their choice (preferably a tomato, pepper, or other nightshade) and a link to the on-line class.
Beginning May 18th, the group will meet twice a month (every other Thursday) to discuss their progress and receive instruction and guidance on their individual growing experiences. This program will culminate in a potluck harvest dinner; where participants will bring dishes made from what they grew to share with the other members. There will also be a tastiest dish and veggie contest for those who are interested.
In the same vein as "teach a person to fish", the power from learning to grow your own food not only connects you to what you eat; providing fresh nutrient-dense ingredients, but also empowers someone to then share their bounty with others. This further promotes community and connects us all through the practice of cultivation and growing.
